MDRC is seeking a junior Analyst to join its growing research agenda related to health and health care among low-income populations. The individual would be responsible for processing administrative and survey data and for collaborating with senior researchers in studying the effects of health care interventions (focusing on studies using random assignment). Current projects include studies of: (1) the effects of providing intensive care management for high-needs Medicaid recipients with multiple chronic conditions; (2) the effects of providing health care benefits to new disability insurance beneficiaries who do not have health insurance, with the goal of helping them return to work; (3) outreach to encourage depressed Medicaid recipients to seek and maintain evidence-based treatment; and (4) a residential and mentoring intervention for high school dropouts that, in part, helps them make healthy lifestyle choices, such as exercising and eating well.
Under the guidance and supervision of senior researchers, the Analyst will (1) collect, process, and manage quantitative data from survey responses, agency administrative records, health claims records, and service provider management information systems; (2) assist in developing measures and analyzing research findings; and (3) assist in the dissemination of results to policymakers, practitioners, and social scientists.
Key responsibilities:
- SAS computer programming to process raw data, restructure data files, evaluate data quality, clean data, create outcome measures, and perform statistical analysis.
- Create codebooks and other data documentation.
- Contribute to and implement the project team’s data management and data security plans.
- Write technical memos that document data processing decisions and summarize the quality of data.
- Contribute to production of reports and papers.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in public health, public policy, economics, sociology, or a related field preferred — or a BA/BS with at least three years of work experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of public policy, especially health policy.
- Demonstrated experience with a statistical programming or database programming language (SAS preferred).
- Demonstrated programming experience with health claims data a plus.
- A good understanding of quantitative research methods and experience applying quantitative methods.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
The position is based in MDRC’s Oakland office.
