  Saskia Levy Thompson
  Visiting Fellow
K - 12 Education Policy Area

Levy, who joined MDRC in 2006, brings a practitioner perspective to a variety of projects aimed at improving low-performing high schools. Levy most recently ran the Urban Assembly (UA), a nonprofit organization based in New York City that develops and manages small, college-preparatory high schools in many of the city’s poorest communities. As the organization’s founding Executive Director, she guided the organization through its start-up years: planning and launching 15 new schools, negotiating a contract with the New York City Department of Education that secured UA’s pilot status as a Partner Management Organization, and developing a strategic plan to advance the organization’s programmatic and instructional model. Prior to her work at the UA, Saskia played a key management and policy role at the Municipal Art Society, where, among other projects, she organized the Tribute in Light, the first large-scale memorial to the victims of the World Trade Center attacks. Prior to that, she worked at the second largest law firm in Argentina, where she crafted a communications strategy that solidified the firm’s presence among North American clientele, resulting in a direct increase in their international activities. Levy started her career as a kindergarten teacher at Public School 110 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. She received her undergraduate degree from New York University. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Saskia is an active volunteer, mentoring a teenager for the past three years and contributing time to community-planning efforts in her home borough of Brooklyn.
