The TANF Data Collaborative Launches


MDRC is pleased to announce the launch of the TANF Data Collaborative, an exciting new effort to accelerate the use of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), earnings, and other administrative data for program improvement and evidence-building at the federal, state, and local levels.

The TANF Data Collaborative (TDC) is sponsored by two offices in the federal Administration for Children and Families: the Office of Family Assistance and the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation.

There are number of ways that TANF agencies can participate in the TANF Data Collaborative, including:

  • Join an introductory webinar on Thursday, July 18, 2:00 pm (ET): Melissa Wavelet (former Colorado Human Services official) and Richard Hendra (TDC Director) will describe three ways TDC can support data-driven management at your organization.

  • Nominate a TANF agency (including your own) to be part of the TDC Pilot Initiative. This is a time-limited opportunity to receive pilot funding to work on a data-driven project with hands-on support from the TANF and data analytics experts at TDC. Nominations accepted until September 30.

  • Apply for a scholarship for Applied Data Analytics Training this fall: The six-day training helps professionals at TANF and related human services agencies develop key data science skills. The curriculum draws on best practices from both industry and government, including adherence to strict federal requirements on security and confidentiality. More than 300 agency employees representing over 100 agencies have participated in Applied Data Analytics training programs.

  • Access free resources on data-driven decision-making and data analytics: The TDC website offers tips on managing data-driven organizations as well as data analytics tools and templates.
